ART DECO PRESERVATION AWARDS FOR 2006

The 2006 Art Deco Preservation Awards swung around the state to recognize a medical building and a flower shop in Alameda, a Sebastapol school, a private home in Palm Springs, a San Francisco funeral home, and a restored theater in El Cerrito.

Certificate of appreciation were given to the 16th Avenue Steps, San Francisco; Laura Smith, Illustrator, Los Angeles; and the United Artists Theatre Lobby in Berkeley.

Awardees were honored at the Society's 21st Art Deco Preservation Ball on April 29, 2006, held in Historic Sweet's Ballroom in Oakland. (Sweet's received a preservation award in 2000.)

Alameda Family Physicians Building

ALAMEDA: This Streamline Moderne Art Deco building was originally a Lucky Supermart built circa 1935. Restoration architect Ron Price brought it back to life as a medical building.

Cerrito Theater Renovation

EL CERRITO: Renovation of this 1937 motion picture theater, which languished for decades as a furniture store, provides an Art Deco landmark for the city of El Cerrito. Spearheaded by architecture critic and author Dave Weinstein, the restoration project soon gathered community support and city endorsement.

"Flowers" Building

ALAMEDA: Longtime family owners John S. Towata Flowers have provided conscientious restoration of the stylish green vitrolite tiles and maintenance of the facade's neon sign.

Parkside Elementary School

SEBASTAPOL: A historic 1935 school preserved and enhanced by the addition of a multipurpose room and library in keeping with the original art deco architecture.

"Ship of the Desert" House
"Ship of the Desert" HousePALM SPRINGS: Loving restoration of this 1936 Earle Webster-Adrian Wilson Streamline Moderne home is a spectacular example of personal dedication to maintaining our Art Deco architectural heritage.
