Gatsby Summer Afternoon

The Art Deco Society of California presents
The 25th Annual Gatsby Summer Afternoon

Sunday, September 13, 1-6PM

Dunsmuir Historic Estate
2960 Peralta Oaks Court, Oakland, CA 94615

Call for Volunteers!

On Sunday, September 13, the Art Deco Society of California will host its Annual Gatsby Summer Afternoon at the historic Dunsmuir House in Oakland California.

Now in its 25th year, the Gatsby Afternoon lets several hundred aficionados of the 1920s and 30s step back to a time when elegance was a way of life and the Charleston and fox trot were all the rage.

This is not a spectator event. From 1-6pm the panoramic Dunsmuir front lawn becomes a stage on which all participants picnic, dance and sip champagne, reminiscent of a scene from The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous novel of 1925. There is something for everyone, including:

An afternoon and fun and elegance!

  • Dancing to the Authentic Twenties Jazz Rhythms of Don Neely's Royal Society Jazz Orchestra with Song Stylists Carla Normand and Frederick Hodges
  • The Great Gatsby Bathing Beauty Revue by the Deco Belles, including the crowning of the new Miss Art Deco
  • Grand Vintage Motorcar Display, with dozens of Art Deco Era automobiles throughout the grounds
  • A Fashion Parade at which you can show off your sense of style in a promenade before our stage!
  • Dance Demos featuring your favorites like the Foxtrot, Charleston or Lindy
  • Prizes Awarded for best Auto, Fashions, Dance contestants, and Picnic

With everyone attending this event in period fashions, the effect is stunning! Many guests bring period-perfect picnics, with settings from elaborate spreads, complete with silver, crystal, linens and china, to simple wicker baskets on vintage print tablecloths.

Afternoon attire from 1920-1940 (or reasonable facsimile) is required.

Great Gatsby Reading Circle

This year's Gatsby Summer Afternoon on Sunday, September 13, 2009 will feature an action packed 45 minute discussion of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s nove, The Great Gatsby, at 2:30 pm. Attendees will be invited to read lines from both the book, and Francis Ford Coppola’s script from the 1974 Hollywood film with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. Don’t miss this opportunity to help re-create memorable moments from this legendary story of love, longing and loss set in a society teetering on the edge.

Reader's theatre is a style of theatre in which the participants do not memorize their lines. Rather, they simply read through a book, play or film script together. Each participant uses vocal expression to help the audience understand the story rather than visual storytelling such as sets, costumes, and intricate blocking.

We are going to re-create the scene in chapter seven at the Plaza Hotel. Volunteers will be asked to read the parts of Gatsby, Daisy, Nick, Tom and Jordan. So study this segment of the story and practice reading the various parts.

Remember to bring your enthusiasm and a copy of The Great Gatsby
