WASHINGTON, DC

New Date Set for Longest Running Modernism Show on the East Coast

Annandale, VA—The Art Deco Society of Washington (ADSW) recently announced a new date for its 23rd annual Exposition of the Decorative Arts (Expo). Formerly held in June, the Expo has been rescheduled to occur on Sunday, May 21, 2006. Don Selkirk, Expo Chair believes that the new date will help patrons of the Expo avoid the many time conflicts that customers experience in early June in the metropolitan Washington, DC area.

There will be more than 40 exhibitors at this 23rd annual Expo, representing more than 10 states on the East Coast. Expo dealers offer a wide range of 20th century collectibles for sale including furniture, vintage clothing, World’s Fair ephemera, clocks and watches; vintage posters, Czech and other art glass, Rookwood and other art pottery, Fiesta and other ceramic dinnerware, books, magazines, and other memorabilia. Dealers often create delightful, room-size displays to showcase their merchandise. Furniture from the Art Deco and Modernism periods is always a big seller at the Expo.

Although the show has a decided Art Deco emphasis, the participation of such dealers as Tom Gibbs Studio (Massachusetts) and Deco Deluxe (New York), has established the Expo as a major player in Mid-Century Modern.

The Expo is not only the longest running Modernism show on the East Coast, it is also managed and operated entirely by ADSW volunteers. Proceeds support the preservation and educational activities of the Society in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. Both ADSW representatives and Expo dealers are always eager to talk about these preservation efforts, opportunities to participate in the ADSW, and the many items offered for sale during the day. ADSW members and customers enjoy dressing in vintage attire during the Expo.

Show hours are from 9 AM to 6 PM. Sunday admission is $8 for members and $10 for nonmembers. Memberships are available at the door. Refreshments are available. An ATM and a shipping company are onsite – both make buying easier.

The Expo is held at the Ernst Community Cultural Center on the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Getting to the campus is easy. Take the Capital Beltway (I-495) to Exit 52A towards Fairfax (Route 236, Little River Turnpike). Make a left on Wakefield Chapel Road (3rd traffic light) and follow signs to the Expo. Both garage and outdoor parking are ample and are available at a nominal cost.
